Build Your Own World -- 2D Tile World Design Document


Final project for UC Berkeley's CS 61B - Data Structures class, completed in the Fall semester of 2020. This project was worked on with a partner and is posted with permission.

This project is a game that generates a pseudo-random 2D tile world with rooms and hallways for the player to explore. Worlds are customizable with different tile themes, and the player is able to have a player name. The game has the ability to save and load user progress at any point in the game. The user interface includes a main menu, name and theme selection, and a user stats header. A tile-hover feature is also included, which details the type of the tile the mouse is currently hovering over. The goal of the game is for the player to collect all of the gold while avoiding hidden mine tiles that decrease the player's lives. The game is won when all the gold are collected, and the game is over when the user runs out of lives.

The following design document details the technicals of the project, including the data structures and algorithms employed.

- setTiles()
    - sets the appropriate tiles for all elements used in the world
    - is based on the theme selected

    - Use this for setting numRooms and the dimensions and location when creating a Room object

Persistence

Saving the Game

In order to save the game, necessary information to the uniqueness of the game will be saved to a text file. The information written to the file include: game seed, gameplay moves(WASD keys), player name, game theme. A java FileWriter object is used to write to the text file MyFile.txt, and it does not append to the file, so information is written to a fresh, blank file each time. All of the written information is separated by lines, one piece of information per line. This is done for the sake of reading the information later on in game loading.

Loading the Game

In order to load the game, the necessary information is read from a text file. A java BufferedReader object is used to read the information line by line. Since the order of the identity of the information(whether it is the seed, the name, etc.) does not change, we can use this feature to our advantage and deterministically grab the necessary information and store it in our variables. After reading and storing the information, we then create a WorldGenerator object to create our world, and then iterate through our gameplay string(WASD keys) to move our avatar to the last entered keystroke. Finally, we set the relevant variables in our UI handler object, and then create and draw our world, rendering the frame. This brings the user to the state of the game they left off at when they quit and saved.
