This is a place for the paleobotany and paleoart communities to find references to papers with illustrations of extinct plants that are based on direct evidence from the fossil record. This spreadsheet was initally compiled by Mario Coiro, with help from Nathan Jud and Andres Elgorriaga.
The spreadsheet is a comma separated file (.csv) that can be opened in excel. Each row represents a reconstruction of a species or plant community. Some species are known as "whole plants," whereas others are partial reconstructions (for example leaves on a branch).
Instructions for browsing the list of references.
- Navigate to the "paleobotany reconstructions reference" csv file
- you should see the entries and be able to scroll through them.
- Alternatively, download the file.
- Open in MS excel or a similar application.
- Sort the spreadsheet by plant group, formation, period, continent, etc.
Instructions for contributing a reference to the master list.
- Create a GitHub Account.
- Download GitHub Desktop.
- Navigate to the file in this repository.
- Open the file from your browser using GitHub Desktop (use the monitor-shaped icon in upper right of the page)
- Edit the file to include your new reference
- Commit your change.
- Submit a pull request to add your change to the master.
