Zenodo is very useful and the new release adds a lot of improved functionality. One feature I think is still missing are download statistics for each deposit. The altmetrics integration is nice, but I suspect a lot more people download an item than blog or tweet about it. So download statistics would provide very welcome, more fine-grained information and it wouldn't even take an external provider to collect the data. The French repository HAL does this very nicely (even distinguishing between page views and downloads). I personally would prefer those statistics to be public, but if this raises concerns, maybe an opt-out / opt-in solution is necessary.

I agree.
How to do ?

https://zenodo.org/policies Policies

In order to enhance Zenodo and monitor traffic,
non-personal information such as IP addresses
and cookies may be tracked and retained, and log files may be shared

Datacite?
datacite statistics are only for DATA centers
Try this example:
https://search.datacite.org/ui?q=*&fq=has_metadata%3Atrue&fq=is_active%3Atrue&fq=prefix%3A%2210.5281%22&

Download statistics is high on our priority list. Right now we're focusing on versioning to be launched by end-March. We haven't planned for Q2 yet, but the big new feature will likely be either statistics or community teams for Q2. We are co-developing most features with our sister services here at CERN for @inveniosoftware and stats is also high on their list, but can't say anything for sure yet.

The sentence from the privacy policy refers to that we use Piwik (instance here at CERN) for web analytics

Thank you for the feedback. I'm hoping you can include it for Q2.

We from EFSA would like to have download statistics as well

FYI: Development of the underlying Invenio modules for statistics have been started by one of our sister services. Once the new modules are ready for production we will install them on Zenodo. I would estimate that to be sometime late Sep to early Nov.

Are you refering to invenio-stat, which has now reached version 1.0.0a7? Do you have an update of when it can be installed on Zenodo?

Hi, I'm also in favour of download/view statistics, it would be a very nice improvement to showcase positive benefits of opening knowledge using Zenodo.
Are there any update (maybe a Christmas present ;-))?

Sorry, unfortunately no Christmas present :-( but the ground work have already been done in https://github.com/inveniosoftware/invenio-stats

We got quite delayed in Q2-3 with our plans due to http://blog.zenodo.org/2017/07/19/upload-storage-incident/. We've been catching up in Q4, but right now I estimate, we can launch the feature around April.

Thanks @lnielsen for the answer.
Do you know if the stats will count also all the download/views happened before the release of the new functionality? Or the numbers will be collected only after that?

We're very interested in those numbers ourselves, but it depends on if we can extract them from our current Piwik instance. It might be we launch without in first round, and try to get them in later afterwards (i.e. to not block the launching the feature)

Hi @lnielsen thank you so much for listening to this request, I am also interested in this feature :) has there been any advances?

We're starting implementation on statistics in early June.

Statistics were launched in July 🎉, so this can be closed
