Extra whitespace in files

README.md begins with a blank line. That line should be removed. It also does not end with a blank line, but should.

To close this issue, go through the files in this repo and look for similar whitespace issues. Every file should end in a single blank line and all trailing horizontal whitespace should be trimmed. Bonus points if you provide a script that could be used to do this automatically!
