Engineering Manager for the Open Source Program Office

We are now looking for an Engineering Manager for our distributed Open Source Program Office team! This position is open to candidates in the Helsinki or Berlin area and to remote candidates in Europe. We will also consider candidates in other regions.

In this role, you will be working with your direct reports as well as with other managers in the OSPO, product managers and company leadership to build the future of Aiven.

You will be leading and enabling a growing team of Open Source developers working remotely. The team focuses on contributing to Open Source projects like Apache Kafka®, Apache Flink®, OpenSearch, PostgreSQL, and MySQL among many others. People reporting to you will be defined according to your background.

To succeed in that role, you ideally:

  • have previously contributed to Open Source projects
  • know how to support a team of experts to continuously learn and improve
  • excel at getting the best out of people and have consistently built great teams through an inspiring and effective leadership style
  • enable and empower your team
  • have experiences with working in a rapidly growing organization
  • have hands on experience with any of the following projects: Apache Kafka®, Apache Flink®, Apache Cassandra®, OpenSearch, PostgreSQL, MySQL, ClickHouse, M3 or Redis

Requirements

  • People Management Skills
    • You have at least 5 years of hands-on technical leadership with at least 2 years of people management experience
    • You have experience in recruiting strong engineering talents
    • You have a passion for managing and motivating teams to reach their potential, including performance management
    • You understand what it takes to build performing teams and develop talents
    • You know how to work in a distributed team environment
    • You are familiar with establishing a way of working and run continuous improvements
    • You understand the peculiarities of the Open Source environment
  • Technical Skills
    • Bachelor or Master Degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience
    • At least 5+ years experience as a software developer
    • Strong standing in technical discussions, a subject matter expert, and getting-things-done mentality
    • Have a proven experience in contributing to Open Source projects in the past
    • Experience working in a fast-growing tech start-up / scale-up
