The open source version of TinyMCE 6 will reach End of Life (EOL) on October 31, 2024.
TinyMCE 6 is licensed under the open source MIT license, and will continue to be available under that license past the OSS End of Life date. After that date, however, the open source version of TinyMCE 6 will no longer receive security patches.
To ensure the future security of any applications in which you use TinyMCE, we recommend you upgrade to TinyMCE 7 before TinyMCE 6 open source reaches End of Support, or purchase a commercial license and continue to use TinyMCE 6 until mid 2025. You can also switch to our subscription version of TinyMCE 6 or 7 on the cloud.
If you’re concerned about your project’s compliance with the TinyMCE 7 GPL v2+ license terms, please consider moving to our commercially-licensed product.
TinyMCE for Open Source
We recognize that the GPL may not align with the needs of certain free and open source (FOSS) projects. In response, we are introducing the TinyMCE for Open Source program that will provide a custom license to qualified open-source projects.
This custom license will permit the use of TinyMCE 7+ in open-source projects with a license that is incompatible with GPLv2+. To apply for the Tiny for Open Source Program, please fill out and submit an application here.
Finding your TinyMCE version
To find your current TinyMCE version number:
Visit a page where the TinyMCE editor is running
Open up developer tools in your browser (instructions: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge)
Open the “console” tab or menu item (varies by browser)
Type in the command tinymce.majorVersion and press enter
The major version (e.g. 4, 5, 6 or 7) will be shown. If you’re using version 7, there’s no need to upgrade.
If you have the help plugin enabled in your editor, you can also open the help dialog and see your exact version number there.
An example on Chrome:
Upgrading to TinyMCE 7
Most simple upgrades take under an hour, but depending on your level of customization, the upgrade process can be more complex.
Depending on your configuration, you may have to make some changes to your implementation of TinyMCE 6 to migrate it to TinyMCE 7. Our team has put together a handy Migration Guide to help guide you through this process.
Download the newest open source version of Tiny and check out our paid, cloud-hosted plans available at https://tiny.cloud/get-tiny.
