Sparse histograms got merged into Prometheus (#11447) as a enable-feature, and we should investigate its integration and test its compatibility/performance effect on the Promscale side.

Initial thoughts:

  • Given sparse histograms create a lot of series, I suspect it will affect the PromQL querying performance due to a very large _prom_catalog.series table
  • We need to update our pkg/prompb and pkg/promql bindings from upstream. I also suspect that the new prompb bindings in Prometheus is not compatible with us (due to this), hence this becomes high priority
