I cannot upgrade my SM-S820L past Android 4.4.4. It says this requires 6.0 … is there an older version I can download?

Before Android 8, USB was configured through /sys/class/android_usb/android0/ compared to the current path /config/usb_gadget/*/. USB functions should be configurable through props and one or more init.usb.rc files. Any additional features would need to be patched into your kernel's /drivers/usb/gadget/android.c afaik.
