I'll add to this, that it may be nice to move away from nanosecond time deltas for the output. These wrap at 292 years, which isn't terribly long for overturning circulations (for instance). Even a microsecond time base (29,000 years) would be nicer for most things I think veros is geared towards.

Sorry, should have read the source code - this is something xarrray is doing - decode_timedelta=False returns the data as floating point days.
