Will checkout but at the outset this looks excellent. |

@francoisschwarzentruber I tested this both locally and on your remote server. This might be the first minimap I've encountered that works for me (probably because it is not so mini, after all, neither does it stay on the screen unnecessarily after use). Thank you. Is it an illusion, or has drawing become susceptible to lag since this update? I have a feeling that the pencil used to be more responsive and the lines smoother. I noticed the (potential) issue both on localhost and your server instance. Also, the board would scroll horizontally on its own while drawing over a PDF (!). I'll keep testing and report back if I notice any useful patterns. Thanks again. |

Thank you for your feedback. Well, it is not so mini, but the more large the board becomes, the more mini the minimap becomes. ;) I guess that the (potential) loss of responsiveness of the pen is not due to the minimap, but to previous changes (explanation in PS).On my computer, I do not see any difference of responsiveness. Concerning the unexpected horizontal scrolling, I am sorry. I was able to have that bug. By change the color! I have corrected that bug. PS:

Apologies for the brief delay. Digging into the git history of the project, I realize that I might have been reporting an illusion. There seems to be no difference in responsiveness compared to earlier commits. My alarm was not entirely false, though: What happened, rather, is that I attempted to scribble actual music in small notation, with note-heads less than 10 pixels in height. (Obviously this was attempted after reducing the chalk width to 1px.) The notes were much smaller than those of your animated gif above. It is admittedly difficult to draw with such precision using a mouse or touchpad. But 10 pixel symbols are well within the precision and control range of a Wacom tablet. The responsiveness of the board is not worse than that of the best open-source whiteboards I've tried. Still, a couple of adjustments could render it even better for highly detailed work:
I think these three issues, described here in a laboratory context, are the main constraints to the controllability of the chalk. Again, nothing to complain about—this works well already, and I understand the conflict of priorities involved. |

Apologies for the long delay. I was busy with the beginning of the second semester. Thank you for your comment. Well. Actually, almost all the issues you raise are because pixels are logical and not physical. The height of a board is 1000px whatever your screen is. The reason is for all users see approximatively the same thing. For your first point, I think "distance of 20-30px (informal estimate) between the moving chalk head and the chalk trace" and "to produce angles in the drawing", maybe it is because your device is too old? Do you experience that with other online boards? What is your browser? On my computer, the drawing is immediate and the distance between the moving chalk head and the chalk trace is... 0px, maybe 2px if I am fast. |

Thank you for describing the logical coordinate system — now I understand that rounding small deviations are inevitable. As discussed elsewhere, I agree with your decision to employ the canvas as basis. I'm glad to hear there is no lag between the chalk and its trace on your system. My device could certainly be to blame (a 2013 Core2Duo MBP). You correctly guessed that most online boards I've tested on this particular machine exhibit the issue. Happy new year!
I think it is nice to have an overview (sort of minimap) of a whole course. By pressing "n" (for "navigation") you have an overview and you can navigate in the board.
Do you think it is useful?
