This issue also affects i3, and there's an open pull request fixing it: i3/i3#5521
i3 issue, same steps to reproduce on sway: i3/i3#5382
You need more than 1 display to reproduce this issue:
Spawn two windows in tiled mode, can be the terminal window in this example.
Focus parent to select the two windows
Then try to move the two selected windows into another display using the move left/right commands.
Sway/i3 will fail to move the windows when attempting to do this.
Now if you toggle vertical and horizontal split back to back, the issue gets fixed and now the two tiled windows can be moved together between displays using the move left/right commands even though the windows look exactly the same they did when they originally spawned.
