Switching to "integrated only" seems to have saved my early 2013 Macbook Pro that started crashing yesterday after a security update.
Was planning to switch to Catalina from High Sierra but worried the process might brick the computer...(Want to upgrade to the new version of Logic Pro, that doesn't run on High Sierra).
Any thoughts on this? Will the computer possibly try to switch to discrete GPU during the installation and get stuck?

Clone your existing system to an external disk, boot from it and run the updater. If all goes well, repeat on the internal disk or even clone the external back to the internal one. If you run into problems, just unplug the external disk and reboot…
My Catalina system partition uses ~12 GB, even a 16GB USB driver should do the trick. I find https://bombich.com <https://bombich.com/> very easy for the cloning steps, they offer a trial version that should do well enough.
Thanks a lot, great tip! I actually got SuperDuper for backups which has on option for bootable copy of the system (sandbox). And a 16 GB USB drive too, will check if this works. (Will check out the CCC trial if I run into problems SuperDuper)
