Description

What steps will reproduce the problem?

Define a function, eg:

def gaussian_likelihood(mu,sigma2,x):
    n = float(len(x))
    first = 1/((2*np.pi*sigma2)**(n/2))
    then = (-(n/2*sigma2)*(np.mean(x)-mu)+np.var(x))
    lik = first*np.exp(then)
    return(lik)

Then attempt to execute the function in console, eg:

x = np.array([1,2,4,0])
gaussian_likelihood(0.34,np.var(x),x)

Will get NameError: name 'gaussian_likelihood' is not defined.

Code works fine when run by other people/devices.

Hey @manethedane, thanks for reporting. I have a quick question for you: did you define your gaussian_likelihood function in the console and then run your other code from the editor?

Ok, thanks for clarification. Could you upload a screenshot to see how you're running your code?

Please be aware that you can't send images via email. Instead, you need to drag and drop them directly here, on the Github website.

Yes of course.

Thanks @manethedane! Although it's not visible, I think you the first command you ran in the console was

import numpy as np

If that was the case, then it means you didn't run the code you have in the editor before trying to call gaussian_likelihood in the console. And that's why you're getting this error.

So, all you need to do before running

x = np.array([1,2,4,0])
gaussian_likelihood(0.34,np.var(x),x)

is pressing F5 or clicking on the Run button in our main toolbar (i.e. the green play button). That will load your editor code in the console so you can experiment with it there.

Let us know if that solves the problem for you.
