how to add $(iterm2_prompt_mark) after newline?

I'm using iterm2 3.3.1 on a mac.
I would like to display the prompt mark on the first or secont line of my spaceship-prompt.
By default, it's being displayed ont the first (the empty) line.

I already tried using export ITERM2_SQUELCH_MARK=1 with SPACESHIP_CHAR_PREFIX and SPACESHIP_VI_MODE_PREFIX but the former creates a linebreak and the latter leads to unexpected results when doing autocomplete tabbing.

Is there a simple way to add a single letter / variable to one of the lines?

Unfortunately this is not what I want.
I actually like the newline.
I would like to be able to add the special prompt mark variable at the beginning of the second or third line without writing a whole extension of that’s possible.

I would prefer to keep the newline before the prompt and have the mark only in either the address or the prompt line…

I'm also interested in this. I want a multiline prompt and I want to add %{$(iterm2_prompt_mark)%} to the beginning of the last line of the prompt. The solution suggested adds one to every line, but that's not the need. Is there a way to do this?

Would love to get this working in fish + starship, also tried a custom command with no luck.

This is working for me in Zsh with the following ~/.config/starship.toml.

format = "$all${custom.iterm2_mark}$character"

[custom.iterm2_mark]
command = 'echo "%{$(printf "\033]133;A\007")%}"'
format = '[$output]($style)'
when = true
description = "The iterm2 prompt marker for shell integration"

You will need to export ITERM2_SQUELCH_MARK=1. Try restarting your shell after making these changes.

A little more information: starship launches another shell to run command, and so iterm2_prompt_mark will not be defined. Instead, I copied the body of that function into here. %{ is a Zsh escape sequence and \[ needs to be used for Bash. If you use both shells then with a little tinkering I'm sure you can stick a conditional into the command.
