Partially addressed in #62. I have rewritten the runner fairly comprehensively as part of the async changes that were rolled back. I'd still like to eventually land this work, and that goes hand-in-hand with the testing. So I'll keep thinking about this one. Leaving the issue self-assigned for the time being.
