the grey areas are from the paste layer. a stencil is cut with these openings and then solder paste is squeezed through the stencil onto the PCB. The parts are then placed on the footprint (with the solder paste underneath) and then the whole thing is "reflowed" in an oven to solder it all together. The holes in the golden area are vias, which are used to conduct electricity and heat from one side of the board to the other. |

Can anybody explain me what's going on here? What are these grey rectangles? Why these holes in the golden area? I am watching some videos about replacing ASICS and they have some kind of stencil that create little balls on the golden area of the ASIC. It doesn't make any sense to me.
