I was replaying Paper Mario and the game had been working completely fine until I entered Dry Dry Ruins, in which case the game would frequently freeze. I could only get one or two rooms deep into the level before the freezing happened. The freezing doesn't seem to happen during battles and when I leave Dry Dry Ruins I seem to be able to play as much as I want. I even opened up an old save file where I'd already beaten Dry Dry Ruins and returned and the game froze even then.

having the same issue at the moment, I have to make frequent save states to roll back to because the game keeps freezing

Please update your Iris/Arc Xe driver to one newer than v31.0.101.4824

Just adding that it also happens at the ghost mansion, and so frequently that it essentially makes Paper Mario unplayable.

As for updating the graphics driver, I'm afraid that's not an option for everyone. My laptop is an Acer with an Intel card running Linux, and neither Intel nor Acer offer linux drivers. It's either the Ubuntu default or nothing. (or a secret third option I have not heard of)

If there's any configuration file I can edit to disable whatever is causing this bug, I would very much like to do just that.

nonsense, mesa covers your device.

Uhh, ok. I just updated Mesa to the latest version on the ppa, and I'm still experiencing freezes at Dry Dry Ruins. (driver is i915, card is a very basic intel 620 uhd).
