Using a supported version?

  • I have searched searched open and closed issues for duplicates.
  • I am using Signal-Desktop as provided by the Signal team, not a 3rd-party package.

Overall summary

The text is invisible (or the same color as the background) in multiple locations. Highlighting the text and pasting it elsewhere will let you read the contents. Underlines for links and spell-check are still visible.

  • text input window when typing a message
  • text input in search bar
  • messages (both sent and received, as well as link previews)
  • the 'About Signal Desktop' info window
  • built-in icons for 'Note to Self' and group chats

The text is visible in the sidebar / chat list, and the latest message can be read there.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Quit the desktop app and launch it again

Initially, this was only happening when typing new messages. After quitting and relaunching, it is happening in all the other places mentioned.

Expected result

Text is readable

Actual result

The text is invisible (or the same color as the background)

Sorry about this. Could you try installing over (without uninstalling) using the installer from the website, please? Please let us know if it helps!

When I opened the desktop app again today, the text returned to some areas:

However, the icons still have issues and the 'About Signal Desktop' window is still missing text (see original screenshots)

After installing over using the installer here (https://signal.org/download/), I don't notice any changes. The issue remains the same

It's not a big inconvenience for me, but it might be affecting others as well

I see... Could you try installing Signal Beta side-by-side and see if it has the same issues?

Thank you!

For sure

I installed Signal Beta, and it does not have the same issues. All the text and icons are showing up as expected.

I'll continue using both in the meantime and see if I notice any changes

Thank you for getting back to us! This is a very interesting observation, indeed. Signal Beta and Signal are nearly identical so my guess is that something with the installation of Signal has gone wrong, but for some reason reinstallation doesn't fix it.

I think this might be a corrupted GPU cache issue. Could you close the app, open %AppData%\Signal in the explorer and and rename "GPU Cache" folder to "GPU Cache (Backup)" (or some other name), and then start the app again?

That seemed to fix it! Everything is back to normal, and I'm not noticing any other graphical issues.

I still have a copy of the GPUCache (backup) folder, and I'm happy to pass along any other information that could be helpful. Otherwise, thank you for the help!
