Can't compile with clang

I recently updated to clang (Apple LLVM version 5.0 (clang-500.1.63) (based on 
LLVM 3.3svn)) and I can't build svn revision 503.  One error was a preprocessor 
error and the others were related to integer narrowing.  I've "solved" the 
issue by switching to longs but I haven't thoroughly tested the result.  It is 
related to command line stuff, not the library core.

I've attached a patch that gets things working.
