It would be great if the offline compilation is more easily added by the user.
One idea would be to provide this offline compilation as a separate package or integrate it directly into DocDown. For example, it would be conceivable to first try online compilation and then fall back to offline compilation if an error occurs.

The main issue with the current offline compilation process is that it requires a full installation of pandoc and texlive on the users machine. This is quite cumbersome for most users to manage for themselves. One possible solution could be using the docker image locally. But usually, when you have that one running, you wouldn't need online compilation at all.
Another thought i've been looking into is creating a small DotNet/C# LaTeX distribution based on something like XeLaTeX with a builtin package manager. This could alleviate the need for the texlive or docker installation. This will probably be the way forward, as I have two months off starting today.
This issue, along with others will probably be updated with the development of the aforementioned LateX distribution. Therefore it will stay open for a while.
