Is it OK to use a schema.org property on its own in JSON-LD?

Is it OK to use a schema.org property on its own in a JSON-LD document, outside of a typed object?

For example, Example 43 from the draft W3C WoT Thing Description 1.1 specification has a semantic annotation "schema:softwareVersion" : "1.0.1" at the top level of the document, rather than being inside an object with @type: "SoftwareApplication".

Another example would be using longitude, latitude and elevation at the top level of a document, outside of a GeoCoordinates object.
