Suggest a gradual approach towards something structured:

In README.md
Project's web pages under "Contributors"
Where supported by the programming language's list of contributors (e.g. R, Java/Maven)
In codemeta.json of a particular source code repository
Codemeta expanded to use https://schema.org/Role
In an RO-Crate that can cover software content beyond repository (e.g. documentation)
