Currently when someone shows up without a web3-capable browser we send them to get one from MetaMask. However MetaMask now seems to be non-free, which is bad in this context because the ability to fork software at any point is one of the things that avoids the need to trust developers. Also, it may not be legal to use MetaMask at all, since the new code won't be licensed MIT, and some the old code may not belong to them and can't be distributed with the new license, per MetaMask/metamask-extension#9285

Test an alternative, probably Brave, and replace the link and logo.

Hi @edmundedgar, I'm sorry you're disappointed in our decision to move to less permissive license. As you can see from our response to the licensing issue, the legality of our license is not in question.

MetaMask will remain free to use and open-source.

Hi @edmundedgar, we appreciate your feedback. I did want to second the point @rekmarks made above and point out that there is no change for dapp developers or end users, only commercial forks of the wallet. Additionally, our license is actually still significantly more permissive than virtually every other wallet of this type. Most competing wallets have totally proprietary licenses and don't even allow inspection.

@jacobcantele @rekmarks Thanks for commenting. The ability to fork key infrastructure (commercially and otherwise, and in any case your license's definition of "commercial" is quite mysterious) is part of the security model of the decentralized web, so we're not going to recommend that our users get dependent on non-free software.

PS I really appreciate the work MetaMask have done over the years - so most of what we wanted to do just wasn't possible until you guys built it, we were waiting for it for years. Also we're still supporting metamask (in the sense of testing on it and fixing related bugs), we're just not recommending it any more.
