The project might benefit from the sponsoring. I am sure there are many other projects and organizations who use LuaJIT and would be happy to chip in.

I second this. This is a good idea on many levels, even to the point that just seeing a Lua-related github repo with sponsoring enabled might improve peoples perception of Lua as a viable language (from the outside it really looks like it's about to die)

How does that work? We don't have an organization for receiving and distributing money. I'd love to see @eugeneia sponsored for the great work that he does.
