Hi guys,

We noticed some mistakes and some things that need updating in the workbook. Is that in any repository? If not, what would be the process we need to follow to contribute to this?

Thanks,
Despo

Awesome! It's here: https://github.com/railsgirls/railsgirls/tree/master/assets/workbook

The indd version. For the fonts, you should find them also in the repo.

Thanks @lindaliukas :)

Could you also have @leemachin added to the repository, he is one of our coaches and is keen in helping out with this.

In addition to this, how would you guys feel if we converted this to either latex or html to make it easier for others to contribute. Shouldn't it also this be part of the guides repository, so it's publicly available?

Thanks

Added Lee :) Happy to evolve the guides - though I think having something printed is kinda charming and important in the workshop (although updating it is a pain..). But let's try out Latex! The reason the .indd isn't publicly available is because of the font issue :)

Thanks for adding me! We're also discussing whether or not HTML + CSS would be more appropriate instead, given that it's a relevant component of what we teach.

Yeah.. So the workbook should totally be made into a similar, interactive site as the guides. Changing the title of this.

We can still keep the PDF, since I think having something tangible really means a lot, but the main content should be community editable. Changing the title of this issue :)

To get started on this issue I would need to know where to find the pdf files. In railsgirls / assets / workbook / I only find two Indesign files that are not compatible with my Indesign version. Does anyone have these pdf files for me? @anikalindtner ?

Hi @lindaliukas, I seem to be having problems embedding the Interstate Black font (which was used for most of the cheat sheet: #541) into the pdf, due to licensing issues. It shows and prints fine if I have the font installed on my computer, however it doesn't embed it properly (Arial will be used by default instead for anyone who opens the pdf and doesn't have the font installed). Have you ever come across that problem before? Just wondering if there is a workaround or if I've used the wrong one, as there are so many here: https://github.com/railsgirls/railsgirls/tree/master/assets/fonts

thank you in advance!

I will provide html version soon and I am going to take a shot with creating simple sinatra app that will take care of converting it to pdf and exposing to users online. It can be then placed as subdomain to railsgirls site or whatever will work :)

@krzysztofbialek Our experiments at the hackathon showed that using princexml or docraptor works best. We had some issues with Chrome PDF export and wkhtml2pdf mainly related to page sizes.

I know it can be done and it's not a problem for me to make a proof of concept. And there is nothing that should stop you from implementing your solution :).

I used wkhtml2pdf in few projects and page sizes wasn't much of problem. So I just want to see how it will work with this.

And then we will pick whatever will be better for maintaining.

We had an issue with full colored pages. Those would either overlap to a new almost empty page or be a tiny bit to small so you'd have a white line on the bottom.

Ok seems as though there's a number of threads on the workbook renewals.. If anyone has materials please add them to the repo (link above) or railsgirls/FrozenRailsWeekendHelsinki#11 there. Will try pull it all together :)
