Pull authentication out of core and into an extension (as discussed in #356).

This will make it easier to drop in a new auth module for things like two factor authentication, LDAP or AD integration, etc.

Oops, this might be a sub-task of #23
I'll leave it open anyways (since I'm hoping to get to it this weekend... as usual, we'll see if it actually happens).

I'd wait until this weekend and we'll see; lately everytime I sit down to get some work done on a side project, work pulls me away :)
