## Set up a Virtual Machine in the Cloud
Google provides a [quickstart guide](https://cloud.google.com/compute/docs/quickstart-linux) to setting up a virtual machine.
* Select Ubuntu 18.04 LTS as your OS.
* Connect via a browser window.
## Using Your Virtual Machine
* Continue with the [Data Carpentry Tutorial](https://datacarpentry.org/cloud-genomics/03-verifying-instance/index.html)
* Because tmux is already installed, try installing R on your virtual machine. First, if you try to run `R` you will get an error that it isn't installed, and you will be provided with installation instructions. When you try `apt install r-base-core` you should receive an error that you don't have root privileges. To install with privileges use `sudo apt install r-base-core`.
## Backup your Virtual Machine
* Click Snapshots on your cloud site and Create Snapshot
## Set up Multiple Similar Servers
* Click Images and Create Image
* Select source: snapshot
* Select your snapshot
* Click Create
* Under the main Images window select your Image and Create Instance
* Open a command line browser for this Instance
* Type `R` and you'll see that it is also installed on this server
## Delete Your Virtual Machine (and other work)
Use Google's [quickstart guide](https://cloud.google.com/compute/docs/quickstart-linux) deletion instructions. If you don't delete your machine you will be charged hourly for it.
