We can have a number of meeting dedicated to bash, git and python/r trough the year. As materials we can reuse software carpentry tutorials.

Refer to http://lists.software-carpentry.org/pipermail/discuss_lists.software-carpentry.org/2014-September/002202.html for more details.

I think this is a good idea, since all the uni courses are completely restricted to java. Besides scripts will be relatively easier to learn and give them an alternative. We could also have a course using ssh and running shell scripts on the remote machine

We could also use the Python docs + you can switch between versions of python https://docs.python.org/3/tutorial/

Lets schedule a bash+git meeting the same way as 'Scientific coding' is scheduled.

Btw, there we are going to look into python, numpy and friends. It should be very useful for 3rd year students who are about to start their project.

Also, what if we organize a one evening workshop where shoe students how to:

  • set up a dev envinroment on their machine
  • Install javac on Windows
  • Login to a student server using ssh
  • Copy files there and back
  • Setup printing
  • Any other difficulty a fresher faces

Maybe, someone should really come up with a page where we start putting information in a much more structured way.

I think this workshop should be run by students (for students). I'm happy to help making the materials for it.
