# SPDX-FileCopyrightText and # SPDX-License-Identifier lines in __init__.py, __about__.py, __main__.py etc. necessary?

The default project templates adds such lines to these files yet I note the hatch project itself does not include such lines. Is that just because this template version (obviously) didn't exist when the hatch project was started. I just want to understand if it now considered best practice to include such lines. I presume it is.

Yes it is recommended. I should think of a way to enforce this, maybe via Ruff.
