Hi everybody! 👏

We all at Public Lab 🎈 - learn, grow, work, brainstorm ideas, contribute together so why not share about our weekly goals and the awesome work we have done at Public Lab with each other, so we can support and collaborate with each other better. We have a Community Check-In each week, where every community member can share something about their work from the past week and about their current week's goal 🎯 . You are also welcome to share fun-fact 😄 , new ideas 💡 , your learning goals ☑️.

We believe in collaborative efforts to support our community. We are running a learning platform that helps a newcomer to become a leader of tomorrow.

Did you submit your outreachy proposal?

It is official! The application period is over for this cohort of outreachy. Over the past four weeks, a lot of work has gone into making contributions, assisting other newbies to make their first-time contributions, drafting a proposal, and getting helpful feedback from mentors. If you submitted your proposal, a big thumbs up to you. If you've had at least one mentor give you feedback, a bigger thumbs up to you. You have done well.

What next?

Continue making contributions. If like me, you love this community and their welcoming spirit, then it is almost certain that you would want to keep making contributions.

Note: As far as you submitted a final application on the outreachy website, you can keep making and submitting contributions until the final interns are announced on November 23.

For more details on the two public lab projects and how to make contributions,
see the links below:

2. New Dashboard Implementation Project: Bootstrap 4 and Rails

As always, if you are stuck, overwhelmed, and have questions feel free to reach out here. We are all happy to help.

You can also join the discussions happening at Gitter to reach out for new first-timer issues or even find someone to pair program with.

This Week's theme - Do That Which Scares you

Over the past week, I finally mustered up the courage to get started on learning backend development. I had been putting it off for a long time. I was pretty happy with my knowledge of the frontend technologies, Html, css, Javascript and React. What's the need to learn backend anyway? Even if I wanted to, could I really get to understand it? I wasn't sure. I doubted myself a lot. But my mum always says, do that which scares you. In there lies your growth. I decided to take her word for it and dive deep into backend development. What is the worst thing that could happen? Oh, maybe I had issues understanding certain parts? Well, then, I could ask questions. What if I asked questions and nobody answered me? Well, then, I would make my research on google.

What did I find out? My mum was right. I have gained a level of understanding in this past week than I could have ever imagined. The only regret I have is that I wish I started earlier. I wish I faced my fears way earlier than this. Maybe, then, I could have made more progress. But it's never too late.

So to everyone reading this, I challenge you today. Do something today, this week, this month that scares you. Do that thing that you have been putting off since forever.

  • Scared to make a first-time contribution? Make it. Read through the issues, search for ones that interest you, inform the mentors that you'd like to tackle it.

  • Have you been wanting to learn web development? Frontend? Backend? Full-stack? Stop holding back. Get started. Why? Because fear is all in your head. I promise you'll get a hang of it.

  • It might even be a much simpler thing? Maybe you want to make a goal to put a call through to your loved ones, once every month but you've been postponing it. Stop! Do it. You'll be glad you did.

And finally, always remember, it doesn't matter how fast you go, it doesn't matter how slow you go. What matters is that you keep on moving. Even if you end up not being successful at that which you did, you can feel confident in the fact that you tried.
