Hello folks from Outreachy - we wanted to say WELCOME and create this issue as a discussion zone. Please leave a comment to say hello, in part so we know who's interested in the program! @publiclab/reviewers @publiclab/plots2-reviewers @publiclab/mentors please keep an eye open for opportunities to welcome and support our Outreachy applicants! 👍 🎉

Our project this year is:

Refine Geographic UI and JS Integration for PublicLab.org
Deadline is Nov. 5, 2019 at 4pm UTC to record your contributions and create a final application.

You can find it when you sign in at https://outreachy.org

First contribution

We ask each applicant to try their hand at making a first contribution. 🙌 We've made this as easy as possible, and it should really help, as all our contributions follow this basic workflow. If you haven't yet, please see this page to get started:

https://code.publiclab.org

Seeking Mentors!

We're looking for some friendly, supportive mentors who know our community and practices well, and are looking to help people get started. We especially welcome mentors from groups underrepresented in free and open source software!

Mentors check in with a student at least once per week roughly during the program, and offer some project management guidance and encouragement... while relying on the chatroom and the @publiclab/reviewers group to provide code-specific input, so that we share the burden of specific technical support. We have weekly Check-Ins on GitHub (#4548) as well, and mentors are expected (along with students!) to be in the rotation to post these occasionally.

Remember that to be a mentor you don't necessarily need to know how to code -- we also need mentors who know Public Lab's community and practices well, and who can encourage students to speak up when they get stuck, and to ask the community for input and testing of their work. Students often get stuck when they don't know how something should look, or how a feature might be used by the community -- contextual info!

If you're interested in being a mentor, leave a comment here -- and read over our software outreach resources to get an idea of how we work!

Some key resources on mentoring:

Supporting tasks

Another area you might be interested in contributing (as an applicant OR a mentor) is in supporting other new people to the project. This is an often unrecognized part of a healthy collaborative project, so we've made these issues to encourage people to take part in this crucial activity. We'd love your help, and as a newcomer yourself, you know exactly what it feels like to be new, so you know how important it is to be welcoming and supportive!

support

You can help new contributors in getting started by creating new FTO issues - #4963

CALL FOR OUTREACHY PROPOSALS

We'll be posting a more official call for proposals here very soon, so stay tuned!

Thanks and we're happy to answer questions!!

Hello everyone! I am one of the maintainers of the project and I work for the Public Lab non-profit. You'll probably see me all over and please know you're welcome here! 👍 😄 💯

As you may have guessed, our community runs on kindness and helping one another out 🙌 , so thanks to everyone who's taken their first steps, and ALSO to those who've helped someone else make their first contribution!

Wow this is a very interesting project !! - "Refine Geographic UI and JS Integration for PublicLab.org"
Would love to help the winter round outreachy interns :)
Count me in too !

@SidharthBansal I don't think everyone has access to the outreachy website unless you were an intern or mentor previously. I don't see any such official application form on their site atm. Am i missing something ?

Both actually, you have to decide what you want to do. Mentors are people from within the organization, however people from outside are welcome to mentor as well, if they contribute and get some idea of atleast one of the codebases. Outreachy applicants or interns, are the people who will be working on the projects. Do you have some clarity now?

Hi Saurabh, Please check the eligibility criterion for Outreachy Students, I think India can participate in summers only. If you are Indian(which I think you are), then you cannot apply as a student. However you can participate as a mentor Thanks all!

On Tue, Sep 17, 2019 at 8:49 PM Isha Gupta @.> wrote: Absolutely! I would recommend that you go Outreachy's official site and read some guidelines about how to become an intern and contribute and whether or not, you fit in an apt category to become an Outreachy intern. Hi all!! A few applicants have been asking about the Outreachy eligibility rules. Here is the link for the rules: https://www.outreachy.org/docs/applicant/#eligibility. Please go through it and take care of the geographical region of your school because students of the Southern Hemisphere will only be eligible for the December to March round as per rules.
Also, don't get demotivated if you are not selected or not eligible for this round. You can help us with GCI-19 for mentoring students and creating the task. You can find details here. And each contribution counts also it will help in the selection of candidates ineligible for this round in the next round.
Good Luck with your applications!

Hey @subhahu123 @samagragupta, thanks for the interest of being a mentor... @subhahu123 after filling the form you can go ahead look for the Publiclab project and click a button I believe is co-mentor this project(if you have not done that yet) or something close and Jeff will approve your request. @samagragupta just go ahead to outreachy.org and sign up to participate as a mentor, and then follow the above steps. Make sure you check out the resources provided on the description on this issue. Thanks all
