It looks like the default on os x according to appdirs is ~/Library/Application Support/, but in practice most people I know use ~/.config for their dotfiles even on macs. It would be nice if ptpython checked for presence of a config file in that location, and used it if present.

As an example of precedence, the following applications all use configuration files in $HOME/.config/ when present:

  1. git
  2. alacritty
  3. fish
  4. neovim
