Description
Current docker-compose.example.yml and instructions in repository do not allow to easily deploy an instance.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

Install docker for arm64/v8 or amd64 (Environments section)
Create user 'photoview' and add him to docker group
Create docker dir in photoview user home directory.
Navigate to docker directory
Create docker-compose.yml file with contents (Environments section)
Issue docker-compose up -d

Expected behavior
docker compose deploys a working instance

Actual

Photoview container restarts every 24 seconds. See Error Logs
Database container is not setup with correct users credentials. Neither of root, photoview, root@%, photoview@%, root@CONTAINER_IP, photoview@CONTAINER_ID is accessble after dropping into containers shell.
Database container does not allow Photoview container to access mysql instance. See log.

Environments
This was tested across two different machines. Armbian Buster on an arm64 board and Debian Buster on an amd64 platform.

I can't see exactly why the database connection fails, did you change the environment variables after creating the containers initially? Also is there a particular reason why you changed the default database environment variables?

Remember to delete the volumes if you change your config with docker-compose down -v

They are default for mariadb image container that this docker compose config is using. Both prefixes are supported (though the MYSQL logic is mangled in the init script they are using).

Remember to delete the volumes if you change your config with docker-compose down -v

I've started from scratch multiple times, with multiple configurations.

I've used the default yml file with volume path changed only.
I've dropped into the database container shell.

Using mysql as any user with host set (-h) to anything but the localhost/local ip fails.

Given above

Database container is not setup with correct users credentials. Neither of root, photoview, root@%, photoview@%, root@CONTAINER_IP, photoview@CONTAINER_ID is accessble after dropping into containers shell.

Might be chalked up to misconfig.

Additionally photoprism docker-compose.yml works fine.

Well i could 100% back up bhm .... it simply fails at exactly the steps already mentioned.
Happens on both sides the photoviewdb aswell as s the photoview itself.
Makes sense to me since the compose doesn't care about puids and guids and even if my knowledge is pretty limited I see from other docker_compose files that it's essential to ensure that if something from within a container wants to access things on the out world it must be given access.
Tried with adding - PUID=xxxx and - GUID=xxxx in to the environment sections of the compose file but without luck. As said not skilled for docker, portainer and similar things. I'm more after a 1-click-and-be-done soluton as long as it comes to installation, since my scop is using software not the installation process.
Nevertheless since I run into thast issue with lets say 99% of all solutions based around docker_compose files, perhaps you got an idea why this all happens. And yes I even did go that far to not only black everything inside docker but even uninstalled and reinstalled the complete docker on the synology to be on the safer side. I also used portainer to see if theres any leftovers and in case wiped them.

oh got a slightly hom-brewn mistake. Removed everything which made it look nicer (db renamed into photoviewdb for example)
And while on that I missed to use the correct pwd in all sections. My fault.

But now all seems to work but when entering the page is says:

This is half year old already but I hope I can add anything to this. Today I also got this error and the UI bugged out of its life. For some reason some other containers also suffered from this, and I went to check their logs on portainer. Turns out that if using the default configuration while other containers also use their own mysql database, there's some cross talk between the db containers, hence the unauthorized user (doesn't exist in the other instances). To solve this I changed the docker-compose.yml to use the container_name parameter in the db section and then used the name in PHOTOVIEW_MYSQL_URL variable:

Did anybody ever have any luck with this? I tried Photoview the other day. Immediately after launching it I realized I was using the default password so I changed it and recreated it. Ever since I've had no success in getting them to launch as I'm consistently getting error 1045. I've done prunes, deleted containers, deleted volumes, recreated them, etc etc. Also tried the fix noted above but no dice. At this point I'm not sure what else I can do to stand up Photoview. If anybody has any ideas so I can try this app out I'd greatly appreciate it.

example of 100% working compose file would be (used myself with Docker, but now dealing with Podman - trying to fix issue that mariadb can not create files in directory '/var/lib/mysql/data' without root previleges (using rootles podman) - /usr/bin/mkdir: cannot create directory '/var/lib/mysql/data': Permission denied. Fatal error Can't create database directory '/var/lib/mysql/data'.)
