When using Chrome to browse local files via file:/// , I can't use the navigation or other vimium commands. Is this a limitation of the underlying plugin framework?

Have you tried enabling the "Allow access to file URLs" checkbox in the Options -> Extensions list?

Hit the triangle next to the Vimium icon to reveal the option.

Ah, didn't see that option within chrome. I assumed that the extension was responsible for this behavior. My bad!

@lamnatos, can you please explain where do I find "Allow access to file URLs" in Chrome? I do not see Options menu except when I go to Extensions. Then opening Vimium Options does not show the choice "Allow access to file URLs".
Thanks.

The option to allow access to local files is not in the Vimium options. It's in the list of extensions:

  1. Go to chrome://settings/extensions to open the list of your extensions.
  2. Find the Vimium extension, click the small gray triangle on the left of the Vimium icon.
  3. Two checkboxes should appear. One of them is the one you're looking for.

@lamnatos Thank you. I missed that small gray triangle earlier. Thanks again.

@philc Vimium is a truly awesome extension. One of the best.

The checkbox doesn't seem to be there any more?

In Chrome 89.0.4389.90:

  1. Go to chrome://extensions/?id=dbepggeogbaibhgnhhndojpepiihcmeb
    1. Alternatively, go to chrome://extensions/
    2. Find Vimium
    3. Click Details
  2. Toggle Allow access to file URLs
