Do I need to maintain a manual index for prepend to work?

As I understand, in order to implement reverse endless scroll, I need to make use of firstItemIndex , as shown in the example.

Does that mean I will have to maintain my custom index of the data list, instead of relying on the list's actual index (starting from 0, ends at list.length - 1)?

Basically I will need to have a key that naturally increments as new items are added to the list?

Ok, I realized that firstItemIndex can be negative. So if I do not have an index field in my item, I can actually decrement firstItemIndex by the size of the new data prepended.

However, would appreciate if someone can enlighten me if this approach is optimal. Thanks!
