The binder dev team is working on supporting authentication. Once that is supported in binderhub, we will really want to add that here to provide additional security on the pangeo binder deployment. The importance of this is obviously underscored by the potential to spawn more than one kubernetes pod in the pangeo binder.

@dsludwig - jupyterhub/binderhub#666 landed this morning. I'm wondering if you can help push this forward on our deployment.

Absolutely! I should have time to work on this next week.

@jhamman, @TomAugspurger - I'd like to enable this on aws binder (github auth). Seems things have come a long way since this issue was opened (#81). Once the dask-gateway changes are in I vote to try this again on staging and see if user interface issues are already fixed or easily fixed.

No objections to trying this out, at least on the AWS binder.

Could binder authentication enable persistence of user home directories?

It could, there's a writeup here https://discourse.jupyter.org/t/a-persistent-binderhub-deployment/2865
If you need more information it'd be best to follow-up on that post.
