After updating to latest version 2.9.1 filter doesn't seem to work. I track some words but to avoid for example Turkish tweets I filter some Turkish chars but now I see these tweets again.

This is probably related to the deprecation of UTF-8 across filehandles. I'll see if I can dig into it a little more. Does it seem to work for ASCII filter words?
Drive-by: I think a complete fix is going to require encoding the command to the background process for querying and setting synced options. The pack_magic incantation should be sufficient like is done in other places, but since it will hex-encode everything, the packet size will need to be doubled at the same time.
