Can't start outline after initial setup: "Cannot use import statement outside a module"

I have cloned this repository to my macOS, and followed the steps for the normal installation. I am using Node.JS v12.16.1, PostgreSQL 13, Redis 6.0.9.

I have filled the necessary details in .env, and the database tables have been created by yarn sequelize:migrate --env=production-ssl-disabled.

When trying to start outline, I get the following error:

What is wrong here? Note that the instructions indicate I should start ./build/server/index.js, which does not exist when cloning the repository. I guess its meant to be ./server/index.js.

Sounds like you missed step 2,

Oh, indeed. Stupid me. I actually indeed missed step 2.

Now it seems to be running. Thanks for the quick response. Now I might have another question, is there a option or even a fork to run outline with local users database, and skip the third party services (slack, google, etc)?

This is not something that's supported right now. You can invite guest users via email, but the product is designed to be used primarily with Google or Slack sign-in.
