Currently, OpenMapTiles prefers OSM over Wikidata if the local name variant is filled in - e.g. if there is a name:es filled in, it will be used for Spanish translation.

However, as @pnorman pointed out, in case there is only a name tag filled in and the object is located in Spain, the name:es tag is taken from Wikidata (even though we have a Spanish name in this case).
Example:

It would be great if the name tag is automatically used for name:es in Spain (if the name:es tag is missing), name:fr in France, etc.

This approach would require developing a mapping from regions to presumed languages, which is not necessarily straightforward.

#1547 requests something similar.
