It seems that optical size correction went a bit over the board, making them essentially bold, to the point that in super/subscript regular and both symbols are indistinguishable. $n^{n\symbfit{n}}$ gives:

For comparison, here is Fira Math, which is one of the very few other sans math fonts

Improve weight of ssty infinity

Apparently while fixing notofonts#41 I scaled the ssty versions but didn’t
increase there weight. They are now comparable to other operators
(to be fixed together when notofonts#58 is addressed).
