Profile partial not rendered on about page

The profile partial is included at the top of the about page layout and is clearly intended to be rendered but out of the box it doesn't display.

I fixed/hid this problem by changing my site layout. My about page was content/about.md and since moving it to content/about/_index.md the profile partial displays properly. I'll leave this open as it still appears to be a problem with the way the template is rendered.
