I kept getting a timeout error when trying to deploy prometheus manually to an existing cluster. Adding an externally accessible NodePort service, and pointing helm to it as described here resolved the problem.

I'm going to investigate this some more, but it seems fine to create this service as part of cluster setup and configure the helm client as part of cluster login.

Fixed by upgrading to helm 3
