I love this app and have been using it for years! I am now on the latest Mac M1 and I noticed it doesn't work some times. My screen would go dim and I check to see if the app is set current and it's set on indefinitely.

For me it doesn't work at all. Display turns off with "Allow the display to sleep" option unchecked. After that Macbook Air M1 goes to sleep.

Does not work for me at all as well. I'm using ver. 1.6.2. I tried quitting the app and launching it again. My OS is MacOS Big Sur ver. 11.6 (Intel). Used to work for me about 2 weeks ago, not sure if it's the latest Big Sur update on June 9th that broke it.

Same problem here. 1.6.2 on a M2 Air running 12.5, clamshell without power will not work. I suspect something has changed with 12.5 or the M2, has it looks like other apps (amphetamine,..) are also suffering from this issue. On Amphetamine it looks like a it fails to load a kernel extension, perhaps pointing to a change in 12.5?

Still seeing this issue on M1 Ventura. I'm using 1.6.3 and sometimes the app icon doesn't show up in the menu bar. But when I check processes, the app is still running. There is just no way to turn it on/off so it's useless.

Sounds like multiple issues are mentioned here. Here are some notes that might be useful for debugging:

  • if you close the lid of your MacBook of any type, the system will go to sleep. This is not a supported use case at all because of potential thermal issues and restrictions by macOS
  • if your Mac goes to sleep even when the app is running
    • try opening the Activity Monitor app and use the search bar to check for caffeinate
    • there should be exactly one entry when the app is activated and none if it's deactivated (this is the underlying system tool by Apple to actually keep your Mac awake)
  • if the app is not showing up in the menu bar, it is not running at all
    • try opening the Activity Monitor and use the search bar to check for caffeinate and KeepingYouAwake
    • caffeinate should only be listed if the app is showing up in the menu bar or if you launched it manually
    • KeepingYouAwake should only be listed if the app is showing up in the menu bar
  • for issues of any kind, please open the Terminal app and type pmset -g
    • there are two lines that might be interesting for debugging purposes:
      • "sleep" and "displaysleep"
      • these lines should contain caffeinate when the app is activated

If you notice anything that doesn't match those criteria, please feel free to report back
