select property on Query

When I run the following query:

let slips = try await Payslip.query("staff" == staff)
            .select("total_")
            .limit(300)
            .find()

I was expecting it to return objects where nothing was populated except for the Parse default properties (createdAt, objectId, etc) and the total_ property.
Instead, I received the objects with all properties populated.

Is my understanding of how the select property works incorrect?

Or perhaps it only works from a specific ParseServer version onwards?
I'm using ParseSwift v5.9.3, and ParseServer v3.6.0

Apologies, just noticed the big warning that says it requires Parse Server v5.0.0+
