In words like လျော့ "to lessen, diminish" and လျာ "to gauge, size up", the /l/ sound is merged or reduced, such that the words are pronounced /jɔ̰/ and /jà/ respectively, instead of /ljɔ̰/ and /ljà/.

Some things to take note of:

  • In some cases, such as in compound ယုတ်လျော့ "to lessen, decrease"), /l/ might still be optionally pronounced. (according to the SEALang.net dictionary).
  • In အတိုးအလျော့ "N. variation", the component လျော့ is pronounced /əʃɔ̰/. For this case, only the Simple1 system takes into account this pronunciation, providing the alternatives lyo|lyaw|sho|shaw
  • For a similar word, လျော, /l/ is still pronounced in ရွေ့လျော "to change (circumstances); to pass (as of time)", လိုက်လျော "to comply with; to go along with" and လိုက်လျောညီထွေ "appropriately; in conformity with". Note: there is no distinct entry in SEALang for လျော

It might appear to be that if လျော့ is in the middle or trailing part of a compound, then /l/ is pronounced, but this is not likely not the case, as လျော့ in words like ပေါ့လျော့ "ADJ. lax, slack", လျော့ရိလျော့ရဲ "loosely, slackly" and မေ့လျော့ "to be forgetful" is still pronounced /jɔ̰/

Will investigate more on this particular phonological property.
