I'm not sure how the searching works, but I'm thinking that maybe the following prioritizing would be good:

  1. Emoji name matching exactly to the search term (e.g. :art: should be the first when searching art).
  2. Emojis starting with the search term.
  3. Emojis containing the search term.

art is a good example (would be nice to have :art: as first result):

The current search implementation is just hiding/showing emojis from a set list of emoji, i.e. maintaining the emoji orders. It'd be a non-trivial change. :/ But I agree, I have wanted this.
