It turned out that even markup like <ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.rio2016.com/en/</ref> (note no closing }}) could be seen in mature articles. There was already started somewhere in code concept of "context knows what finishing symbols to expect", it should be extended to catch this and other similar cases.
