Maybe we can have follow features in this plugin, like xenforo's follow feature:

https://xenforo.com/community/members/mike.3/ (look at the left column)

How would that be different from buddylist?

I'd rather just use the buddy list system. All following would do is take up more db space than necessary since you'd mostly follow those who are your buddies anyway.

I should say I don't think about a completely new feature, but I say we should improve buddy system to make it a useful and efficient one. So we can add some useful features of other systems like follow system to our buddy system.

For example there should be a notification when a buddy logs in, logs out, posts a thread etc.
One of the most useful features to add to this system is tag system.

  • buddies should be able to invite each other to threads and posts with @user tag.

I believe the user tag is accomplished with MentionMe plugin (users can tag each other in threads and posts).
And @dragonexpert is going to work on an Recent Activity Feed #15 which lines up with the need to "follow" your buddies' activity around the board.
I don't know about the login / logout notification, would it really be useful? When you follow people on Twitter, the last thing you'd want to receive is a flood of alerts about people logging in and out ^^.

Logging in and out I don't think should be done. Big waste of db space. It isn't suppose to be like an instant messenger like Skype where you see their name show up as a popup.
