which user to install/upgrade? what's the best practice

I'm quite confused by the documentation.

It warmly advises to use the installer which can be run only by root otherwise it can't install the vast majority of things (I tried once a couple of years ago and I remember it did not work).

Upgrading via installer (still beta accordingly to doc) never worked for me in the last 4 upgrades. Every single time it broke my modoboa installation and I had to restore vm from snapshot. So upgrading via installer is an absolute no-go for now.

The documentation encourages to perform manual updates as modoboa user but it doesn't have enough rights to install some of the packages and this breaks the upgrade. I tried it yesterday from 2.2.0 to 2.2.3. I'm not sure whether this is due to the fact that installer was run by root.

So what's the best practice for a typical user who has a dedicated vm just for modoboa?
Installer with root and manual upgrade by root?
