Primary ICT Introduction

This page has been designed for use by tutors and mentors who are responsible for the initial training of primary teachers. Its purpose is to provide an overview of the information, resources and links on the ICT Tutors Website which will be of most relevance to this audience. The original funding for setting-up the ICT Tutors website was to provide resources for those training secondary teachers. The remit has since widened to take account of those involved in all aspects of initial teacher education - including primary schooling - and the earlier resources have been updated to take account of that.

Keep checking this page, as new information and resources are added to the website, this page will be updated. In the meantime, if you find there is a vital piece of information missing, please email the author (see footnote) offering feedback and suggestions as to what could be added or amended.

Sources of support

Information on how to tap into the induction support which is provided for those new to teacher training. In addition there is information on the professional organisations which can provided you with ongoing support and contacts with like-minded colleagues.

Tutor Issues

Colleagues moving from teacher to trainer or from the school environment to Higher Education can find the transition daunting at first. This section provides practical guidance on how to adjust from teaching pupils to training and coaching those about to enter the profession. You might also find the section in Teaching and Learning on relevant.

There is also information here about the Standards for QTS which all trainees must address, suggestions on how to audit trainees' subject knowledge (for those training to become ICT specialists) and the various routes into teaching.

In addition, if you are setting up a new course, there are suggestions for helping to ensure you recruit the right students, setting the right level of challenge for HE study, and making sure your course is meeting the requirements.

Teaching and Learning

Although a large proportion of this section relates to secondary education, a recently added page deals specifically with issues reating to primary education. In addition, some of the links to information about learning styles and about the pedagogy of ICT (ie how ICT affects the way pupils learn and hence how teachers teach) is relevant to any age group.

A recent addition to the ICT Tutors' website is the section on Models of Teaching, which provides information and resources for tutors designed to help students think about the teaching strategies used by themselves and others. Although the videos provided in this resource are taken from secondary school contexts, the activities and the information are equally applicable to teaching primary aged pupils.

There is also information in the Teaching and Learning section on dealing with issues, though most of this at present relates to secondary schooling. The information and resources for behaviour management, on the other hand, are more generic with some specifically aimed at helping those training to become primary teachers. Similarly, the guidance for setting up computer rooms and suites is applicable to any type of school.

The information on Special Educational Needs (SEN) and ICT is particularly useful to those in primary schools, especially that covering the use of assistive technologies and the teaching of Literacy and Numeracy.

The recently-added section on New Technologies provides a detailed overview of recent developments in ICT resources aimed at supporting learning and teaching. The sub-section dealing with interactive whiteboards includes links to research-based information specific to primary education. Furthermore, the section on digital video provides useful information on making use of these resources with a link to Loveless, Burton & Turvey's (2006) interesting account of a project with ITT students and primary pupils. In addition, there is information here on multimedia books and the primary strategy for literacy and information on animation which features strongly in the national primary strategy.

Finally, the relationship between ICT and the cross curricular themes and dimensions of Citizenship, Sustainable Development and Inclusion and Diversity are relevant to any age group.

Assessment

Two aspects of assessment are covered in this section

helping trainee teachers with their assessment of pupils' ICT capabilities

assessing trainees

The first section on pupil assessment is at present principally directed at those teaching secondary pupils, but the information on the assessment of trainees is mostly relevant to those training to teach any age group. The E-assessment section focuses on the role of ICT in the assessment process and use of e-portfolios. It is supported by case studies of current practice drawn from both primary and secondary experience. The links to portfolio evidence could also prove helpful.

Research

Whether you are working in HE or involved in school-based training, there is an expectation that recent research and inspection evidence will inform your practice and that of your trainees. For those training primary teachers, the information on ICT and pedagogy, ICT across the curriculum and information handling will be the most relevant, but it is advisable to browse the other sections to be aware of what is currently being researched in the field of ICT and learning.

For those in HE, there is an expectation that you will become engaged in your own research and scholarly activity such as writing. The guidance provided here will help to lead you into this type of work.

Resources

A wealth of background information is provided here on publications, web-based resources, software and other resources which will help support your work as a tutor or mentor.

Glossary

Finally, the world of ICT abounds with acronyms and abbreviations, as does the teacher training community. Although not exhaustive, this glossary should help you make sense of some of the terminology you may encounter.
